Dear Readers,
Welcome to the latest edition of the San Diego Participant Observer Newsletter! In a rare confluence, all our regular features are connected to a single region of the world. Our recipe of the month is for
Levantine Sajiyeh Stir Fry, popular with Jordanians and Palestinians. Our book of the month suggestion is
The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and His Mother) by Rabih Alameddine. And our music of the month selection is
Instrumental Music from Lebanon by Andre Haji. On to the events! Despite being the shortest month of the year, February is packed with major annual observances, including Black History Month, Mardi Gras, and Lunar New Year (which celebrated across many Asian cultures).
This weekend, the San Diego Lunar New Year Festival will take place at Henwood Park. The Gaslamp Mardi Gras celebrations are also happening all weekend. On Sunday, there will be an Empowering Black Legacy Celebration at UCSD. On Wednesday, there will be a Lunar New Year Celebration at the Rancho Bernardo Library. The exquisite San Diego Tet Festival will be held at NTC all next weekend.
There are a goodly number of music and dance performances around town. There will be a Lion Dance performance at the Balboa Library. Sunday performances and events include GRAMMY-winning Hawaiian musician Kalani Pe'a at the Conrad Prebys Music Center, a Festival de Danza at the Joan Kroc Theatre, multilingual jazz artist Allison Adams Tucker at Tio Leo's, a Fado Night at Négociant Winery, ABBA tribute band Arrival from Sweden at the Balboa Theatre, and Nuevo Flamenco guitarist Ottmar Liebert and his band Luna Negra at the Belly Up. Next Wednesday at the Conrad Prebys Music Center, the band red fish blue fish will perform Chou Wen-chung compositions using the percussion instruments that are part of the late composer's collection. Next Friday, the WorldBeat Center will hold its 45th Tribute to the Reggae Legends/Bob Marley Day. A very special shout-out to the Center for World Music's concert featuring the Clinton Davis String Band at the La Jolla Community Center. And don't forget that you and your party can get a discount for any Center for World Music concert if you use the promotional code "WVP10" when you
buy your tickets. Hope to see you there!
We are happy to report that there are several theatrical productions happening around town, including The Main Line at Community Actors Theatre, Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler at the Old Globe, The Recipe at La Jolla Playhouse, The Barber of Seville (this weekend only) at the Civic Theatre, and the Romantic Shakespeare performances at the Art Museum on Saturday.
Lots of stand-up comedy to enjoy, including Hermanos de Leche at the Balboa Theatre, Jiaoying Summers (all weekend long) at Mic Drop, Zoltan Kaszas at the Balboa Theatre on Saturday, and Modi at the Balboa Theatre next Thursday.
Special movie showings include Selma at Sunshine Brooks Theatre in Oceanside on Sunday, The Harder They Come at the Central Library on Tuesday, and Follemente (Madly) at La Paloma next Thursday.
Talks around town include a book talk with Shivani Malik on Tuesday at Warwick's, Bad Bunny – Moving Bodies and Making Politics next Thursday at UCSD, and Rediscover Chinatown next Friday (also at UCSD).
Rounding out this roundup is Black Comix Day at the WorldBeat Center Saturday and Sunday, and next Monday, an exhibition featuring the photography of Graciela Iturbide opens at the San Diego Museum of Art.
Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!
